CariCOF Flags Different Drought Risks for Trinidad and Tobago

By the Luk It Hyah newsdesk · Sources · Reporting disclaimer

The Short

CariCOF’s seasonal outlook advises a short-term drought warning for Tobago and a watch for Trinidad by the end of January 2027. Its regional forecast also retains flood potential: a drier season does not rule out damaging heavy rain.

The Full Story

Below-average rainfall and unusually high temperatures affected much of the Caribbean during July to September, according to the Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum, coordinated by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology. Its October update looks ahead to the transition from the wet season into the dry season.

For the end of November, CariCOF advises considering an agricultural drought watch and a long-term drought watch for Tobago. For short-term conditions by the end of January 2027, it places Tobago in the warning group and Trinidad in the watch group. These are regional outlook categories for different periods, rather than a new local restriction on water use.

The November–January newsletter says El Niño could expand or intensify regional drought and reduce the frequency of showers and wet spells. It nevertheless retains high potential for flooding and flash floods across much of the region. A rainfall deficit over months can coexist with brief episodes of heavy rain.

CariCOF advises continued monitoring and water conservation, and directs readers to their national meteorological services for country-specific information. The outlook does not establish that a particular household has lost supply, that reservoirs will reach a specified level, or that WASA has announced new restrictions.
