The Short

CNC3 reports provisional police figures covering January 2021 to September 2026. Detected offences, people charged and convictions are different measures.

The Full Story

Between 1 January 2021 and 30 September 2026, police recorded 40,846 offences under the Larceny Act, according to figures reported by CNC3 on Saturday. The categories include robbery, theft, fraud and break-ins.

CNC3 says the records were prepared by the Police Service’s Crime and Problem Analysis Branch, dated 27 October and obtained through a Freedom of Information request. They list 7,924 offences as detected and 32,922 as not detected: about 19.4 per cent and 80.6 per cent respectively.

The report defines detection as an arrest and charge, rather than a court conviction. It separately lists 10,599 people arrested and charged; that total must not be substituted for the number of detected offences, because one offence can involve more than one person.

The figures are provisional and may change. The account gives no conviction totals or explanation for why the remaining offences were not recorded as detected. Its January–September 2026 figures also cover a shorter period than the full-year totals for earlier years.
