The Short

The Full Story

CNC3 reports that the South-West Regional Health Authority initially issued termination letters to 124 daily-paid employees in October. Following union intervention, workers were told the letters would be withdrawn, but 42 were subsequently dismissed.

The report says a later Ministry of Labour meeting did not resolve the dispute. NUGFW president-general Christopher Streete said an SWRHA representative attended without instructions on how to proceed. He said the union requested an unresolved certificate and expected it during the week.

Streete disputes both the procedure and the authority’s description of the employees as casual workers. CNC3 says SWRHA has maintained that classification and that Guardian Media was awaiting its latest response. These are opposing positions, not a judicial determination of employment status or lawful dismissal.

The report says the union intends to seek redress at the Industrial Court. The certificate, court filing, collective agreement and any judicial determination have not been obtained.
