The Full Story
Trinidad and Tobago's representation in four major capitals came under scrutiny during Parliament's Standing Finance Committee examination of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. According to the Guardian's 26 October edition, Minister Sean Sobers said no ambassadors were posted to Washington, Venezuela or China and no high commissioner was posted to London when he answered Opposition MP Stuart Young. The report describes vacant postings at that point, not a withdrawal of diplomatic relations or the closure of those missions.

Young asked about the importance of filling overseas posts. Sobers agreed they matter, while saying he had personally managed some relationships since entering office in 2025. The minister also said a high commissioner had been appointed to India and that an officer intended for South Africa was awaiting accreditation. Those are different stages: an appointment or pending accreditation should not be counted as a confirmed arrival at post without a current diplomatic list.

The same committee account said the ministry allocated money towards an embassy in the United Arab Emirates. Sobers said three cricketers were hired in 2026 as sporting and cultural ambassadors, with funds proposed for two more in 2027. Those appointments do not fill the vacant diplomatic posts described above. The ministry's current mission roster, appointment dates and timetable for the four posts were not included in the Guardian account; we will check them before reporting that any vacancy remains open after the committee sitting.
Evidence and Context
This is a question of representation and staffing, not evidence by itself that relations with any of the four countries have stopped. A dated ministry roster would show whether the posts stayed vacant and who is handling their work in the meantime.
People seeking consular help and businesses dealing with those countries may need to know which office and official currently handle their requests.
Story-specific reporting note
The Guardian reports the minister's statement, but the reviewed material does not establish the current roster, when each post became vacant or when appointments will take effect.
