The Short

Police shot and killed Mikael Isaiah Lewis in Ste Madeleine on 23 October. The available account comes from a TTPS release reported by the Guardian; key details of the encounter have not been independently established.

The Full Story

Mikael Isaiah Lewis of Corinth Hills died after three officers shot him in Ste Madeleine early on Friday 23 October, according to the Guardian’s 24 October report of a Trinidad and Tobago Police Service release. Police said two men had reported an attempted armed robbery to officers travelling along Hibiscus Drive, San Fernando, at about 3 am. Officers then searched the area and saw a man on a staircase along Alexandra Lane whom they believed matched a description given to them. The paper does not provide the two men’s own accounts or independent evidence connecting Lewis to the reported attempted robbery.

The TTPS account says officers called to Lewis and he ran upstairs while holding his waist. Police said he pointed a firearm towards officers at the top of the stairs and did not obey repeated orders to drop it. Three officers fired. Police said a firearm fell from his hand and was seized. Officers took him in a marked police vehicle to San Fernando General Hospital, where he died. These details describe what police reported; the Guardian article reviewed here does not independently establish the sequence, the recovered item or whether Lewis threatened the officers.

The Guardian says police were conducting an intelligence-led operation and that an investigation into the shooting was continuing. The report names senior officers who led the wider operation, but does not say which three officers fired or publish a scene record, witness interview, video, forensic finding, hospital record or independent investigative conclusion. It also does not establish a charge or conviction against Lewis. Describing him as a proven robber would go beyond the available evidence. His death is news now even while the circumstances remain under inquiry.

The questions for the next report are specific: who witnessed the staircase encounter, what does the physical evidence show about the alleged firearm and shots, and which body is reviewing the officers’ use of force? Any official update should also say whether recordings exist and when investigators expect to release findings. We will add those records if they become available, while preserving the distinction between the original police statement and any later independent account.

Story-specific reporting note

No independent account of the staircase encounter, recovered-firearm documentation, forensic result, recording or investigative finding was available in the Guardian report reviewed. Police have not established Lewis’s involvement in the reported robbery through a public finding.
