The Full Story

A public and private delegation from Venezuela’s Sucre State arrived for a visit scheduled from 26 to 28 October, following a bilateral agenda announced by the two governments in September. An event at Mille Fleurs was planned for Monday. On Tuesday 27 October, the delegation joined local officials and businesses at a roundtable at Hilton Trinidad. The meeting moved the earlier announcement from a planned event to a held discussion; it did not itself establish a new trade route or completed investment.

The September joint declaration set out broader possibilities for commerce, energy, security, air links, tourism, agriculture and culture. The Sucre visit is one specific follow-up. The Guardian’s pre-visit account described proposed talks on market access, maritime links and travel; the later ministry account through TTT News confirms that the roundtable took place.

The pre-visit programme called for trade, shipping, tourism and cultural exchange, and mentioned a donation of Venezuelan cuatros to local organisations. At that stage, the public record contained no participant list, project budget or signed commercial agreement.

At Tuesday’s roundtable, Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers urged practical partnerships. The ministry account lists fisheries, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and energy among the sectors discussed. It also reports a proposed webinar with the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association and a recently signed letter of intent between energy-sector chambers. A letter of intent records an intention to cooperate; the account does not establish funded projects, operating services or an investment contract. The ministry cited 2025 bilateral merchandise figures of TT$33.4 million in exports and TT$34.7 million in imports, figures that describe past trade rather than an outcome of this meeting.

The Guardian’s account of the held roundtable adds that the visiting delegation numbered 16 and that about 50 Trinidad and Tobago companies registered, although fewer attended. Trade and Tourism Minister Satyakama Maharaj raised possible twinning between Güiria and Port of Spain, while the Venezuelan ambassador expressed interest in a maritime trading route. These are proposals, not a launched shipping service. The newspaper also reported that the Sucre visitors did not take its questions, saying they lacked permission for media interviews. The attendance figures and proposed route add detail to the earlier ministry account without changing the absence of a completed deal.

In a further account published by TTT on 28 October, the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association said it intends to lead a trade delegation to Venezuela in August 2027. It described the roundtable as exploring market access, exchange of goods and services, and investment opportunities. No completed trade contract, launched shipping route or funded project was identified in that account. The proposed visit is a future step following the talks, not an outcome already delivered.
