A senior Port official told the station that no mechanical or operational deficiency affecting the vessel’s ability to sail had been reported. The authority said the ferry was functioning at normal capacity and held the required international maritime safety certificates.
The authority said the T&T Spirit departed Port of Spain at 9 a.m. that morning with 654 passengers and 150 vehicles bound for Tobago. These figures and the operating-status assurance come from the authority’s response; the report does not identify the cause of the smoke shown in the circulated video.
